Luca Signorelli
A pupil of Piero della Francesca, Signorelli sets Flagellation within a space built according to the canons of perspective and arranged around the fulcrum line of the column, closed at the back by a beautiful piece of ancient architecture; however, he gives shape to the figures and decorative details with a line of vibrant and nervous, which gives the composition a sense of lively dynamism is entirely foreign to the language of Piero. The work is dated to a period prior to the trip to Rome, the artist, took place in 1482, probably around 1475.
