Flagellation of Christ

Piero della Francesca

The architecture strictly perspective of a soldier scourges Christ before Pilate. To the right you can find the three men who are chatting with. They are dressed with elegant clothes and definitely are part of the court of Federico da Montefeltro. Behind the figure of Pilate, we see a scale very clear that rises above the loggia. On the base reads an inscription in Latin “Opus Petri de Burgo S[an]c[t]the Sepulcri”, (“the Work of Pietro da Borgo San Sepolcro”). The interpretation of the painting in time has placed a lot of problems. Scholars, later on, they knew that the painting contained a mystery interpretation, which as of today has not yet been completely revealed.
Of course there was that the central guy in the red dress was the Duke Oddantonio da Montefeltro, who died before Piero realized the painting. The half-brother of the duke of Urbino died as a result of the conspiracy of 1444, which made the fortune of Frederick.
To the left to place the scene of the Flagellation in the presence of Pontius Pilate. According to another hypothesis, the character of the shoulders, wearing a turban is the muslims who threatened the Catholic Church at the time. In the painting there are many classic quotes: columns, corinthian capitals, and the statue of the Emperor of golden color in the top.
The decorations that we can see on the architectures recall those actually present on the walls of the Ducal Palace of Urbino.
In the painting is dominated by the architecture orderly and rational of classical inspiration. Only the background, to the right you can see a piece of scenery with the sky and the foliage of a tree. The flight lines converge toward a point near to the floor, to the right of the on, at the height of its basin, and the feeling is to observe the scene from the bottom. In this way the characters seem to be arranged above the stage and take on a value monumental. The two lines flight of the white bands of the floor that contain the tiled brown, creating an angle of about ninety degrees.
The prospect of greatness makes clear the distance from the foreground to the background. The floor is also decorated with large rectangles geometric. These decorations work in this way from the grid perspective that helps to perceive the depth of the space represented. In his paintings of Piero della Francesca used bright colors and a diffused light. In fact, the artist painted the atmosphere and dramatic and bodies marked by chiaroscuro evident. The lighting that Piero della Francesca has reproduced in his work has been defined zenithal light. It is in fact a constant in the artist's works in which the light illuminates the scene from the top. Zenit is a term used in the context of observational astronomy. The daily use indicates the position of the sun is exactly above the head of the observer which is located in the foot and is arranged in a vertical line, perpendicular to the line of the horizon.
